Keeping your teeth clean does not just boost oral hygiene it also provides several other health benefits.
Researchers from University College have discovered that brushing your teeth at least twice a day could prevent people from experiencing cardiac problems such as a heart attack or heart disease.
The scientists studied data from over 11,000 middle aged Scottish people who were asked about their oral hygiene habits such as how often they visited the dentist and their overall medical history for a national health survey.
Research revealed that 62 per cent of the participants visited their dentist at least six months and 71 per cent claimed they brushed their teeth twice daily.
Eight years after the study was undertaken, 555 of the survey respondents experienced serious heart problems of which 170 cases were deadly.
It was discovered that those people who rarely brushed their teeth were 70 per cent more likely to be a victim of heart disease compared to those who brushed twice daily and bad oral hygiene was also connected to inflammation in the blood.
Professor Richard Watt stated in the British Medical Journal: “Our results confirmed and further strengthened the suggested association between oral hygiene and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
“Future experimental studies will be needed to confirm whether the observed association between oral health behaviour and cardiovascular-disease is in fact causal or merely a risk marker.”
Those who avoid brushing their teeth on a twice daily basis are likely to require cosmetic dentistry services and teeth whitening services.
Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association, told the Daily Mail that research has shown that poor oral health can result in heart disease, diabetes and even dementia.
He said: “If people-brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, visit the dentist regularly and restrict sugary snacks to mealtimes, this will go a long way towards keeping their teeth and gums in a healthy state for life.”
American rapper Kayne West may have benefited from cosmetic dentistry services after he revealed on The Ellen Degeneres Show that he replaced his bottom row of teeth with sparkling diamond and gold implants.
He told the host: “I just thought that diamonds were cooler. It’s really my real teeth. I replaced my bottom row of teeth. I guess there’s just certain things that rock stars are supposed to do.”
People are advised to use professional cosmetic dentistry services before attempting to imitate the hip hop star.
